Good to know
- Since 2 February 2022, Decree-Law 47/2021 aligns federal-government end-of-service benefits for non-nationals with the private-sector formula.
- Service before February 2022 may have been calculated under the earlier federal HR rules (one month per year for the first five years, then 1.5 months). Ask your HR department how they treat earlier years.
- Local governments (e.g. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah) apply their own HR laws, so the result may differ.
- UAE nationals receive a pension through GPSSA instead of a gratuity.
Questions
Is the federal government gratuity the same as the private sector?
For non-nationals, yes since 2 February 2022: 21 days of basic salary for each of the first five years and 30 days for each year after.
I work for the Dubai Government. Does this apply?
Not necessarily. Emirate-level governments have their own HR laws. Check with your entity’s HR department.
